Hillary Campbell
Family Coach
Hillary grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, hiking and camping with her family. During her teenage years, she discovered that time in the outdoors reliably helped her find a calm and centered state of mind during turbulent times. After studying psychology and humanities at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, Hillary spent two years working in the public sector with at-risk youth. In 2003, her love of the outdoors and commitment to meaningful work drew her to SUWS of the Carolinas. As a Field Instructor, she had the opportunity to blend her interests in service, psychology, and the natural world.
Through her work in the field, Hillary developed a great respect for the transformative capacity of wilderness therapy. While leading graduation ceremonies for SUWS students, she found herself reflecting on what was coming next for these families. How would the deep work of the program translate into a healthier child and a more harmonious family system going forward?
Her search for the answers to these questions led Hillary to pursue a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology at Appalachian State University. During her graduate work, she deepened her relationship with SUWS through outcome research, administrative tasks, and developing continuing care plans for families.
After receiving her Master’s Degree, Hillary was offered a position as a Family Coach at SUWS. Since 2009, she has worked directly with parents and caregivers, offering resources and support in refining parenting skills, developing transition plans, and providing alumni support. Hillary will complete an ICF (International Coaching Federation) accredited program and become a Certified Coach in June of 2022. She is passionate about helping families create detailed, sustainable and realistic plans. In her two decades of work with SUWS of the Carolinas, Hillary has been grateful each day for the opportunity to weave together her interests in service, psychology, and the outdoors. She still lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, sharing her love of the natural world with her husband, daughter and son.
