Typical Day at Approach

At Approach, we look forward to consistently utilizing the land around us to help bring about positive change in our students. Therefore, we strategically plan our days out based on what our environment can provide us with combined with what our student’s therapeutic needs are. At Approach, we offer a variety of different experiences for our students to help strengthen their minds, bodies and souls.

Base Camp
Students will begin the program at our base camp, meet their therapist, sleep in a cabin, and have access to amenities such as showers and laundry. Throughout the program experience, students will return to our base camp for 3-5 days and participate in the following activities:

  • Equine therapy sessions with our licensed clinicians and equine specialist
  • Challenge course experiences with our licensed clinicians and trained staff
  • Visits with our therapy certified dogs
  • Optional psycho-educational evaluation with our psychologists
  • Optional psychiatric evaluations with our psychiatrist
  • Opportunities to transfer skills to a more normative environment
  • Individual and group sessions with a therapist
  • Discussion of objectives, progress and individual treatment plans with staff and clinical team
  • Practice primitive skills such as quartz striking, trap building and bow drilling
  • Enjoy free time to write letters home, work on growth books, do laundry, and play games

Wilderness Expeditions

When not at base camp, students will be engaged in multi-day hiking expeditions throughout the mountains of North Carolina. Even while on the move, the team at Approach will continue to provide the utmost quality therapeutic care for our students that include the following:

  • Summiting mountains to beautiful overlooks
  • Building and establishing safe campsites
  • Preparing and cooking healthy meals
  • Practicing hygiene and self care
  • Camp and wilderness skills
  • Team building activities and initiatives
  • Visits with our therapy certified dogs
  • Individual and group sessions with a therapist
  • Discussion of objectives, progress and individual treatment plans with staff and clinical team
